ClipSubtitles vs Descript
ClipSubtitles vs Descript (2026)
Updated October 2026
Descript joins transcript editing with video and audio production. ClipSubtitles takes an already edited short video through caption review and a quoted export.

Quick answer
Edit the recording or finish its captions?
A transcript can be either an editing interface for the recording or a review surface for its captions. ClipSubtitles uses it for the second job. It leaves cuts and audio changes to your production editor, then lets you correct captions explicitly and deliver subtitle files or styled video from the reviewed project.
Compared
Descript and ClipSubtitles at a glance
Descript details were checked on 29 October 2026 against the sources at the end of this page. ClipSubtitles details come from the product itself.
| Feature | ClipSubtitles | Descript |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Caption a finished short video with a reviewable transcript and style. | A transcript-based audio and video editor. |
| Transcript | Word-timed captions with explicit word corrections, without editing the source recording. | Editable transcript with speaker labels. |
| Caption design | Named motion presets and caption styling previewed on the uploaded clip. | Templates, animation and word-by-word caption styles. |
| Exports and integration | SRT/VTT, captioned MP4 and ProRes overlay, through the editor, MCP or REST. | SRT/VTT and burned-in video; its site also advertises API and MCP. |
| Export choices | Captioned MP4, transparent ProRes 4444 MOV, SRT and VTT. | SRT, VTT and video with burned-in captions. |
| Scope and limits | Up to 10 minutes and 2 GB per video, on every plan. | Plan and product limits should be checked for your source footage. |
| Cost decision | $0 for your first minute of 1080p video (10 one-time credits, no card). Plans from $12/month billed annually or $15 month to month. Paid MCP exports require approval of a fixed credit quote. | Check Descript for current plan allowances and billing. Compare the included usage and the editing steps you need. |
Trade-offs
Where each one wins.
When Descript fits better
Recording production
Descript suits work that includes editing the recording itself.
Speaker-oriented review
Its caption workflow includes editable speaker labels.
When ClipSubtitles fits better
A reviewable caption project
Keep the caption words, timing and style together. An assistant can prepare the work, then you can open the same project in the browser for precise corrections before exporting.
An export cost you approve
The MCP workflow quotes the exact project version before a paid export. Edits invalidate that quote. Failed or cancelled exports release reserved credits, and retries of the approved export do not bill it twice.
A handoff for another editor
Export a transparent ProRes 4444 layer when your finishing editor accepts that format. For a player-controlled subtitle track, use SRT or VTT instead. Subtitle files and previews use no credits.
Decide
Which workflow matches your next video?
Choose Descript if…
the transcript is also how you want to edit audio and video.
Choose ClipSubtitles if…
your short video is already edited and you want to review caption words, preview a style and approve an export through your assistant or the browser.
Workflow example
A podcast excerpt, already edited.
A podcast editor has selected and cut a 50-second excerpt and now wants polished captions for that exact cut. Import the excerpt rather than the whole episode. Review names and punctuation without changing the spoken wording, preview a motion preset and export a social MP4. Keep an SRT copy when the publishing platform accepts subtitle tracks.
Questions
What you need to know.
Are Descript captions static only?
No. Its current caption guide describes animation and word-by-word styles. Its site also advertises API and MCP, so neither animation nor assistant access should be treated as exclusive to ClipSubtitles.
Can I use ClipSubtitles alongside Descript?
Yes, when you can export a finished clip and use it as a new caption source. Finish cuts and framing first, avoid burning in a second set of captions, then review the generated words in ClipSubtitles. Check format compatibility before choosing an overlay handoff.
What should I check before switching?
Try one real clip with names, punctuation and fast speech. Review timing and line breaks on the actual footage, confirm the output format, and compare the whole workflow rather than an advertised accuracy figure. ClipSubtitles does not publish a universal transcription-accuracy claim.
