Quick answer

Build a video composition or manage caption review?

A composition engine and a caption review project solve different parts of a pipeline. ClipSubtitles starts from an existing video, exposes words and styling for review, and binds the approved paid export to that project version. It does not replace a general timeline renderer or require you to rebuild your composition.

Trade-offs

Where each one wins.

When Shotstack fits better

  • Composition control

Shotstack fits applications that need to construct the whole video timeline.

  • Caption sources

Its current caption asset accepts subtitle files and media sources.

When ClipSubtitles fits better

  • A reviewable caption project

Keep the caption words, timing and style together. An assistant can prepare the work, then you can open the same project in the browser for precise corrections before exporting.

  • An export cost you approve

The MCP workflow quotes the exact project version before a paid export. Edits invalidate that quote. Failed or cancelled exports release reserved credits, and retries of the approved export do not bill it twice.

  • A handoff for another editor

Export a transparent ProRes 4444 layer when your finishing editor accepts that format. For a player-controlled subtitle track, use SRT or VTT instead. Subtitle files and previews use no credits.

Decide

Which workflow matches your next video?

  • Choose Shotstack if…

your application needs to compose entire videos through an API.

  • Choose ClipSubtitles if…

your short video is already edited and you want to review caption words, preview a style and approve an export through your assistant or the browser.

Workflow example

Customer review before API delivery.

A developer has an existing 35-second product video and needs a caption review step before delivering it to a customer. Create a ClipSubtitles project from the finished video. Let the customer check words and styling in the editor, then request a quote for that version. After approval, poll the export task and retrieve its download links. Keep any wider video composition in your existing pipeline.

Try this in the editor or connect your assistant.

Questions

What you need to know.

Does Shotstack require static SRT captions?

No. The current RichCaptionAsset supports animated word-level captions and multiple source types. The deprecated CaptionAsset is not an accurate basis for evaluating today’s Shotstack caption capabilities.

Can I use ClipSubtitles alongside Shotstack?

Yes, when you can export a finished clip and use it as a new caption source. Finish cuts and framing first, avoid burning in a second set of captions, then review the generated words in ClipSubtitles. Check format compatibility before choosing an overlay handoff.

What should I check before switching?

Try one real clip with names, punctuation and fast speech. Review timing and line breaks on the actual footage, confirm the output format, and compare the whole workflow rather than an advertised accuracy figure. ClipSubtitles does not publish a universal transcription-accuracy claim.
